Folk Story

Before books, television and internet has widely spread in Bhutan, folk story telling was one of the main forms of entertainment and value education for the Bhutanese public in general and the children in particular. The stories are normally told by an older person and in the evening after the day's work is over. Beside entertaining people with fun and laughter, the stories also impart values such as courage and bravery, love and compassion, morality and belief in law of karma. They often start with the standard phrase 'dang phu ding phu', which roughly can be rendered as 'once upon a time'.
